Gas Smart Meter Trials

25 October 2011 This article was written by: Irish Energy News and Joe Williams

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) has today published the results of its Smart Metering
trials for natural gas customers in Ireland. This follows the roll-out of circa 2,000 gas Smart Meters
for trials in Irish homes and small businesses, with the test period concluding in May. The aim was
to assess the performance of the gas Smart Meters, their impact on customers’ consumption and
the economic case for a wider national roll-out.
The gas Smart Meter trials were one of the largest and most robust carried out internationally, and
the results announced today have concluded that a national roll-out would be a positive
development for customers and the country. The results from electricity Smart Meter trials were
announced by the CER last May and likewise showed clear benefits from a national roll-out. The
gas trials show benefits from gas Smart Meters assuming that electricity Smart Meters are also
rolled-out – the benefits of rolling-out both together is key to the positive results for gas.
Gas Smart Meters can provide more real-time energy consumption recording and customer
information than generally available at present
